Elastomer Isolator Stress/Strain Concentrations
One of my projects while at LORD Corporation was to launch the development of a method of identifying and addressing stress concentrations in elastomer isolators.
I calculated maximum stress, strain, stiffness and other critical information for various isolator dimensions using the simplified hand-calculations that are currently used in the field. I then obtained the specific geometries for isolators and determined a more accurate value for the theoretical maxima for each part using ANSYS simulations. I then combined my findings relating theoretical predictions with simplified versions to identify trends correlating with various geometric features.
My research will be used as the foundation of a growing database that will generate a more comprehensive method for determining critical load, wear, and failure rates for critical helicopter isolator components.
